This is an excellent learning activity that targets fall word associations and can be used by the speech-language pathologist or classroom teacher. The purpose of this activity is to increase students’ receptive and expressive vocabulary skills as they name 2-3 word associations for the provided fall words. This activity may be used during direct instruction, guided practice, or independent student practice. This product was updated October 2015.

This packet contains 3 levels for this activity. The first level has 24 vocabulary cards with picture prompts using smarty symbols™ and text. The second level has 24 vocabulary cards with text on fall themed picture scenes photographed by me. There are also 6 extra cards for you to write your own fall words to elicit naming other word associations with your students. Additionally, the third level has writing practice pages for students to list their word associations.

Research supports the need for direct vocabulary instruction. Marzano (2004) agrees that there is a strong case for the importance and usefulness of direct vocabulary instruction. He states “the research indicates that wide reading probably is not sufficient in itself to ensure that students will develop the necessary vocabulary and consequently the necessary academic background knowledge to do well in school. In contrast, direct vocabulary instruction has an impressive track record of improving students’ background knowledge and the comprehension of academic content.”
