Description
Use this instructional resource to teach children about tier 2 vocabulary that frequently occur in texts and testing. This mini-lesson can be used in speech-language therapy or the classroom. SLPs or teachers should pause for questions during instruction if there are questions. It is important to clarify any misunderstandings that children may have.
After the mini-lesson, provide guided practice and subsequent independent practice activities for the children to learn tier 2 vocabulary. This mini-lesson can serve as both a therapeutic tool to remediate language disorders by a speech-language pathologist or as an instructional tool by classroom teachers. Either way, the goal is to provide a ready to use mini-lesson about tier 2 vocabulary.
Students need multiple exposures of vocabulary in context to learn the words. True learning occurs when students can transfer vocabulary knowledge from immediate to long term memory. When they do this, they will be able to effectively recall or retrieve words when speaking and writing. Intentional repetition of tier 2 words in different activities can help kids learn. Vocabulary knowledge and use is the foundation for academic, social and life success!
